Bell Sensors for use with Beltower

Design and construction of a bell sensor and installation in a tower

This section describes the types of sensor for use in a bell tower, the different ways to implement sensors for a tower bell, the installation of bell sensors in the tower, the addition of switches for calls, connection to a computer and the ringing software interface.

There are also brief details of sensors for hand bells.

Safety First

Never work amongst the bells when they are 'up'.   If you have to work alone amongst the bells, make sure someone knows where you are, and that no-one will ring the bells unexpectedly, while you are working.

Take care to prevent excessive voltages or currents from reaching the computer connections, sensors or components.   Take care not to short circuit or to draw too much current from the computer connections.

Reduce the risk of lightning damage to electrical equipment, by keeping cables away from lightning conductors, and disconnecting the computer from sensor cables and the mains, when not in use.

Never practise ringing a tower bell when on your own - Accidents can happen.
